The core of Confucian wisdom: Cultivating ren

In the latest episode of Embracing Cultures, Gary Sigley, an Australian Sinologist talks on the essence of Confucianism. He points out that The Analects (Lunyu) outlines the bedrock of Chinese philosophy through concepts like zhong (loyalty), xiao (filial piety), and li (propriety). Together, these form a relational framework guiding how we interact with society.

However, the ultimate cornerstone of Confucian thought is ren (benevolence). When asked to define ren, Confucius famously replied: ai ren—"love people."
While "love" today often conjures romantic pop culture, Confucius meant something far more expansive. His version of ai is a broad, deliberate care for humanity and society. Ultimately, ren is a timeless call to foster communal harmony through deep empathy for others.
