Adapted from the Mao Dun Literature Prize-winning work of the same name, the TV series Zhu Jue (The Protagonist), or She's the One, has become a nationwide hit, shining a spotlight on the art of Qinqiang Opera. Onscreen, audiences have been moved by the artistic life of Qinqiang actress Yi Qin'e. Off-screen, a group of young artists in Xi'an — the Youth Drama Troupe of Xi'an Performing Arts Group — is carrying forward the legacy of this centuries-old art form.

In the rehearsal studio, young actors refine their arias and movements day after day. Every note, gesture and rhythm reflects years of dedication and a deep commitment to tradition.

Yang Shengjuan, winner of the China Theater Plum Blossom Award and deputy head of the Youth Drama Troupe, frequently works side by side with the young performers. From hatwing shaking to hair-flinging, from aria singing to eye expressions, she demonstrates every detail herself. She says frankly: "Our profession leaves no room for shortcuts. If you do not put in the work during training, you will regret it when you step onto the stage."

Against the resonant beat of gongs and drums, the troupe continues to rehearse classic Qinqiang Opera pieces such as Touring West Lake and Women Generals of the Yang Family. Since its founding more than four years ago, the company has staged more than 20 full-length operas and over 40 selected scenes, earning accolades at competitions across China.

The troupe also brings Qinqiang directly to the public. At Xi'an's Xingfu Lindai (Happiness Forest Belt), performers take to the stage every weekend, presenting free community performances throughout the year and making the traditional art form accessible to wider audiences.

From the popularity of She's the One onscreen to performances in neighborhood public spaces, Qinqiang Opera is finding new vitality through the passion, discipline and talent of a younger generation.
