Zhao garnered reputation as a gifted painter when still at art college. Yet he felt the academic training he had received over time was far from satisfying his experiments in art. He stepped aside from painting and ventured into other emerging forms of art behind which the vanguard spirit suited him better, such as installation, performance and conceptual art. He also made attempts in fashion design, filmmaking and public art to see how far could an artist reach in creation, and make his work engage more deeply in social activities.
These years he has picked up painting brushes again but with a different approach of presentation. He explores a fragment painting style of which he doesn't paint all over the canvas. While as he did decades ago, he zooms in on those ordinary people and scenery he comes across occasionally, bringing familiarity and humanitarian touch to viewers.
