With a career spanning five decades, Sun Haining is committed to classical Chinese painting, be it on paper or on the surface of glossy ceramics. His work has been shaped by China's many different cultures, from its north to its south, its west to its east.
Hailing from Jiangsu province, Sun studied art under Han Buyan, a disciple of the modern master, Qi Baishi, and trained as a professional in Gansu province. Over the years he has produced landscapes, watercolors, oil paintings, murals and calligraphy.
His one-man show, Endeavoring for Beauty, which is being held at the China National Academy of Painting until Aug 13 (Sunday), is a display of ink paintings and painted ceramics that reflect his research into different forms of cultural tradition.
