Overseas Chinese Town, a major tourism and amusement park operator in China, received 5.96 million traveler visits during the May Day holiday, up 148 percent compared with the same period last year.
These figures were in line with the booming holiday market overall, which saw total domestic trips reach 274 million, up 70.83 percent year-on-year and 119.09 percent over the same period in 2019, generating 148.056 billion yuan ($21.44 billion) in tourism revenue, up 128.90 percent year-on-year and 100.66 percent over the same period in 2019.
This reflects the resilience and vitality of the domestic tourism market, OCT said in a statement.
Travelers showed a strong interest in the cultural experiences on offer at OCT's Happy Valleys across the country, such as music, dancing and art performances, as well as traditional costume parades and intangible cultural heritage experiences.
More than 70 percent of holiday travelers took part at least two cultural activities, according to research by the China Tourism Academy.
