The Shanghai Museum of Glass is presenting a live theater performance featuring glassmaking from Sep 19 to 21.
This is the first theater show in China featuring the traditional glassmaking craft. Performers, also experienced glass artists, will present rich layers of human emotion such as loneliness, hope and the yearning curiosity for the infinite in the process of making glass.
Five performers will present the 30-minute show, named Wanderers, in a dark setting. According to Wang Qin, creator of the show, high temperatures of more than 1,000 C brought great challenges for the show, but they were overcome as "we want to explore the infinite possibilities of glass art," Wang said. Wang went on to explain the unique quality of glass, especially its malleability and its fiery brightness at high temperatures, makes it a material with great theatrical potential.
Two shows will be performed at 1 and 2:30 pm every day from Sep 19 to 21, and every day during the National Day holiday.
The museum will also introduce a series of special tours starting next week, including tailor-made tours for children, as well as immersive overnight visits involving treasure-hunting games.
