Drawing cultural lines

Making drawings is not only a basic practice for artists to hone their techniques. Drawings are also seen as an independent piece of art. Chinese Drawing, an exhibition now underway at the National Museum of China in Beijing and running through Jan 30, teams up modern and contemporary artists whose drawings offer a glimpse at the evolution of Chinese art throughout the 20th century. Works on show include those by masters, such as Xu Beihong and Pan Yuliang, who were among the first-generation of Chinese to study and live in Europe, and who helped introduce Western art and build a modern art education system at home. Drawings by well-established artists of the 1940s and throughout the '70s show the dominating socialist realism, and members of the working class were recurring subjects. While works since the 1980s have taken a more diverse approach, looking to reflect the coexistence of different artistic methods and concepts.

9 am-5 pm, closed on Mondays. Reservation needed. 16 East Chang'an Avenue, Dongcheng district, Beijing.010-6511-6400.
