近年来，中国水彩画的发展令人瞩目，一大批优秀的水彩画家崭露头角。他们的作品形式多样，题材广泛，内涵深隽；他们的足迹遍及中国各地并逐步走向世界；他们的画笔触及现实生活的每一个方面。在作画理念上有很大的拓展。在表现手段上，也从单一的具像、写实，发展到夸张、变形、装饰、抽象等多元手法。中国水彩画进入了前所未有的兴旺时期。

中国水彩画家，在接受水彩画这一西洋艺术形式时，将民族特色溶入其中。中国水彩画是东西方艺术融合的结晶，它超越了东西方文化的界线，中西合璧，成为一门“临界艺术”。既深受中国观众喜爱，又为西方观众所接受。

此次展览汇集了50位活跃在当今中国水彩画坛的的知名画家的作品。这些作品在一定程度上反映了当代中国水彩画的水平。希望观众通过这个展览，能对中国的水彩画有一定的了解。

Preface

Modern watercolor painting originated in Europe and was introduced to China over a century ago. While it differs from traditional Chinese ink painting in basic techniques and concepts, the two styles use many of the same painting tools and methods. As a result, watercolors soon became popular among Chinese artists as well as the Chinese people. More than 100 years of experimentation and practice in watercolor painting have made it one of the most popular art forms in China.

In recent years the artistic ability and global scope of China’s watercolor painting has developed remarkably, and many talented artists have earned reputations worldwide for their work. Their paintings feature diverse forms and a wide range of subjects, and have profound connotations. These works have been exhibited throughout the country and the world to accurately portray the realities of modern-day China. And these artists have made major breakthroughs in painting concepts as well as techniques -- from a single concrete and realistic approach to a variety of artistic expressions such as exaggeration, transfiguration, decoration, and abstraction.

Chinese watercolor painting is a natural blend of both Western and Chinese art traditions. It crosses the boundaries of both Eastern and Western art, and is enjoyed by people in all parts of the world.

Showcased here are the outstanding works of 50 celebrated Chinese watercolor painters currently active in China’s painting circle. To a great extent, these selections represent the best of China’s contemporary watercolor painting. We hope that visitors will gain an understanding of watercolor painting in China through this exhibition.
