2. The event shows the power of a library and promotes its professional skill
The conference comprises four key forums and 23 branch academic forums. As the highest-level conference in the industry, it attracts experts, scholars and institutions from various levels nationwide, including some representatives from the International Federation of Library Association and Institution, US and the Hong Kong Administrative Region and Taiwan Province.
3. The exhibition makes full use of market mechanisms and social efforts
The exhibition covers 8,301 sq m and is divided into two parts in three exhibition halls. It presents many cultural or related projects and attracts 37 enterprises in the digital information field to show their achievements.
4. The Ancient Books Protection Work Conference
The Ancient Books Protection Work Conference opened on September 9, with an exhibition showcasing more than 800 ancient works.
The books all come from different eras, and are aimed at giving the general public a chance to get close to some genuine pieces of Chinese literary history.
"Most of these books are national-class relics. They are literally recordings of our literary history. Here we have the Yongle Canon, the Complete Library in the Four Branches of Literature, inscriptions on tortoise shells and some other rare texts," said Li Honglin, vice-director of the National Museum of Classic Books.
Some of the books contain rubbings from different dynasties. These three books of rubbings are the only examples from the Northern Song dynasty kept by the museum. It's the first time they're being shown to the public.
"We have 1700 rubbings from the Song and Yuan dynasties, mostly from the Southern Song dynasty. The three books of rubbings from the Northern Song dynasty include works by Fan Zhongyan, and one of The Book of Han," said Chen Yanhong, director of Ancient Books, National Library.
The museum also features scripts that were found inside the Dunhuang grottoes... ancient books on foreign languages... and others featuring writers from China's many ethnic groups.
These books were once only accessible to scholars and researchers. Even then, getting access was a long and complicated procedure.
It's hoped this new museum will give the public a real glimpse of a treasured legacy, allowing people to tap into China's centuries-old cultural pulse.
