The Overseas Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition was held in Beijing to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the establishment of People’s Republic of China from Oct 1-7. It showcased more than 200 exhibits of over 100 ethnic Chinese painters from 50 countries.

The exhibition was designed to celebrate National Day, promote Chinese culture, and unite all the overseas Chinese. State Councilor Yang Jiechi attended the exhibition by invitation, accompanied by Qiu Yuanping, director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council, and Cai Wu, minister of the Ministry of Culture.

“The united Chinese nation is the common root of all the Chinese at home and abroad, and the profound Chinese culture is their common soul”, said Cai Wu. He also mentioned that Chinese painting and calligraphy was representative of Chinese traditional culture, recording the 5,000-year-old splendid Chinese civilization and presenting the spiritual temperament and cultural attainment of the Chinese people.

According to Cai Wu, the revival of the Chinese nation could not be realized without the support of overseas Chinese, and the prosperity of Chinese culture could not be achieved without the commitment of overseas Chinese artists. The development of the cultural undertakings of overseas Chinese would be a great boost to Chinese cultural soft power.

Cai Wu expressed his expectation that overseas Chinese artists would serve as the messengers of cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries by telling good Chinese stories and presenting good Chinese images.

Yao Dixiong, representative artist on the exhibition and a renowned Australian-Chinese painter, said that the brilliant Chinese culture was the source of the artistic creation for overseas Chinese, and the great motherland was their strong supporter.
