Tiger Hill Pagoda
|
The Tiger Hill Pagoda (Huqiu Tower), more officially known as the Yunyan Pagoda, is nicknamed the 'Leaning Tower of China.’ Construction began in 959 AD and was completed in 961 AD. The pagoda stands 47.5 meters and is octagonal in a cross-section. The entire structure weighs some 6,000 tons, supported by internal brick columns. Since the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the pagoda has gradually slanted due to forces of nature. Now the top and bottom of the tower vary by 2.3 meters. The pagoda leans 2゜40’ degrees due to the cracking of two supporting columns.
