Great Wild Goose Pagoda

The Great Wild Goose Pagoda was established in the 3rd year (652) of the Yonghui reign of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), when Li Zhi, Emperor Gaozong, built it to settle the Sutra Classics brought back by Monk Xuan Zang from India. Formerly named the Pagoda of the Ci'en Temple, the pagoda received its present name based on a legend from the Great Tang Records of the Western Regions. The 64-meter-high pagoda has a square internal plane, and stairs with hand rails lead to the top. On the four sides of each floor, there are arched doors from which visitors can have a birds-eye view of the area. Preserved on the four stone doors in the base of the pagoda are exquisite engravings of the Tang. The forehead of the west stone gate is carved with architecture joss patterns and pictures with vigorous and smooth lines, which are significant materials of ancient Chinese architecture, painting and sculpture research. Two steles with the Preface to the Sacred Religion written by the famous Tang calligrapher Chu Suiliang are set into the walls on either side of the south door of the pagoda.
