The Three Pagodas of Chongshen (Saint Worship) Monastery
|
Well-known in the southwestern region, the Three Pagodas of Chongshen (Saint Worship) Monastery is located in front of the former site of Chongshen (Saint Worship) Monastery in the northwest of Dali, Yunnan province. The Three Pagodas of Chongshen (Saint Worship) Monastery is composed of one bigger and two smaller towers and they stand harmoniously in a triangle. The largest one is also called Qianxun Tower, a 16-floor square brick tower with a height of 69.13 meters. In the middle of the west and east outside wall of the tower stands a Buddha niche, where a Buddha statue is seated. The two 10-floor smaller ones are eight angled brick towers with a height of 42.19 meters. The surface of the towers is painted with white cement and carved with decorative patterns. Carvings of Buddha statues, lotus flowers, vases, and various other designs cover each floor. On the cap of the tower stand three copper calabashes. During restoration efforts in 1978 and 1980, some 600 historical relics from the Nanzhao and Dali period were unearthed.
