The Iron Pagoda of Youguo Temple
|
The Iron Pagoda of Youguo Temple of Kaifeng, Henan province, is a Buddhist pagoda built in 1049 AD during the Northern Song Dynasty of China. The pagoda is named not because it is made of iron, but because its color resembles that of iron. Thus, it has been named the Iron Tower since the Yuan Dynasty. This octagonal-base structure stands at 55.88 meters. The exterior features varieties of glazed brick and intricate and richly detailed carvings, including flying Apsaras and Chinese dragon.
