Events of China International Culture Association (2002)

1. On January 4, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of China International Culture Association (CICA) met with the 5-member delegation including Koga, President of Japan Random West Association at Ministry of Culture. Zhang Yu, General Manager of China Performing Arts Agency and Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the activity. Both parties held talks on cooperation of stage lighting.

2. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the “Principal Meeting of Sino-Japanese Friendship Groups” jointly held by Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Sino-Japanese Friendship Association at the Great Hall of the People on January 28. Liu Deyou made a keynote speech on behalf of CICA and China cultural and arts circles.. President Jiang Zemin met with the main principals of the groups at Zhongnanhai in the afternoon.

3. On January 29, CICA signed the letter of intent with Hailin Tsusho Corporation of ROK on establishing “Chinese Culture Experience Center” by ROK at Ministry of Culture. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the signing ceremony and hosted a banquet for the 4-member delegation led by Xu Gaizhe, Chairman of Hailin Tsusho Corporation after the ceremony.

4. On January 31, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 4-member delegation headed by Janos Drabek, Vice Chairman of Hungary-China Economic and Cultural Exchanges Development Association at Ministry of Culture. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the activity. Both parties renewed their friendship and discussed issues related to the cooperation of film production between the two parties.

5. On February 25, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 3-member delegation headed by Yoshiaki Hishinuma, Director of General Affairs in Japan Theatre Association. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the activity.

6. From March 28 to April 3, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, Japan 21st Century Yanjing Shodo Exchange Association Calligraphy Exhibition hosted by Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China and undertaken by China International Exhibition Agency and Japan 21st Century Yanjing Shodo Exchange Association was held at the Art Gallery of China Millennium Monument in Beijing. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the opening ceremony at the Art Gallery of China Millennium Monument and the congratulatory banquet on March 28.

7. On April 1, Ueki Kyusen, Chairman of Japan Yanjing Shodo Association passed away untimely during the art exhibition in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations in Beijing. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA bid farewell to Mr. Ueki Kyusen and his families at Babaoshan.

8. From April 5 to 10, Hosoi Calligraphy Exhibition in Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of Normalization of Sino-Japanese Diplomatic Relations jointly hosted by CICA and China Cultural International Tours Inc., and undertaken by National Art Museum of China was held at National Art Museum of China. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the opening ceremony at National Art Museum of China on April 5.

9. On April 10, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 3-member delegation headed by Itou Tomoko, Chairman of Japan Theatre Association at Ministry of Culture. Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and Zhang Yu, General Manager of China Performing Arts Agency attended the events. Whilst renewing friendship, both parties discussed the performance of Japan Theatre Association in China.

10. April 12, Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations met with and hosted a banquet for Nakajima Kenji, coordinator ofJapanese Agency for Cultural Affairs and his delegation at Ministry of Culture. Both parties discussed the exhibitions to be jointly held by the two parties. Nakajima Kenji was invited by CICA to visit China from April 10 to 13. The Japanese party conducted detailed discussion for the Japan Media Arts Festival Awarded Works Exhibition to be jointly hosted by CICA and China Central Academy of Fine Arts in August.

11. Sino-Japanese Modern Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition jointly hosted by China International Exhibition Agency, Asahi and Japan-China Friendship Center in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations was held at the Art Gallery of China Millennium Monument from April 24 to May 7. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the opening ceremony at the Art Gallery of China Millennium Monument and the congratulations banquet at the Great Hall of the People on April 24. Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the opening ceremony at the Art Gallery of China Millennium Monument.

12. On April 29, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for Iriye Kazuo, new Minister of General Affairs Department in Japan-China Friendship Center and his delegation at Ministry of Culture. Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the event.

13. On May 1, Sino-Japanese Inkstone Calligraphy Exchange Exhibition in Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of Normalization of Sino-Japanese Diplomatic Relations hosted by CICA and undertaken by China International Exhibition Agency was held at the Art Gallery of China Millennium Monument. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA, related senior officials, Chairman of Japan-China Tourism Association and other Japanese guests attended the opening ceremony.

14. On June 7, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 6-member delegation headed by Deirabek Essec, Vice Chairman of Hungary-China Economic and Cultural Exchanges Development Association at Ministry of Culture. Both parties reviewed the cooperation between the two associations in the past year and discussed the implementation for the visiting project of Hungarian Defense Music and Dance Troupe to China. Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the meeting and the banquet.

15. On June 10, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Mr. Mitsu, Vice Chairman of Japan Soka Gakkai and his delegation at Ministry of Culture. Mitsu briefed about the preparations for awarding an honorary doctorate to Liu Deyou. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the meeting.

16. On June 13, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 6-member delegation headed by Itou Tomoko, Chairman of Japan Theatre Association at Ministry of Culture. Itou Tomoko briefed Liu Deyou about the progress of the tour performance to be jointly organized with China Performing Arts Agency. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations was present at the meeting and banquet.

17. On June 13, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Mr. Tomoya, Chairman of Japan 21st Century Association and his delegation at Ministry of Culture. Both parties discussed the performance to be sent by the Japanese party. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations was present at the meeting.

18. On June 14, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 7-member delegation headed by OnchiShunyō from Japan Yanjing Shodo Association at Grand Hotel Beijing. OnchiShunyō was on a special trip to express his appreciation to the support given by the Chinese party for the calligraphy and painting exhibition held in Beijing in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the meeting and banquet. Liu Deyou and his wife Gu Juanmin attended the reciprocal banquet by the Japanese party at Hotel New Otani Chang Fu Gong at that night.

19. On June 17, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 3-member delegation headed by Fujiwara, Chairman of Japan Fujiwara Bookstore at Ministry of Culture. Fujiwara Fujiwara was on a special trip to discuss with Liu Deyou the publication of the works written by Liu Deyou. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations was present at the meeting and banquet.

20. On June 26, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for Ozawa Akako, Chairman of Japan Sogetsu Flower Arrangement Association and her delegation at Ministry of Culture. Ozawa Akako was invited by the Japanese Embassy to China to present flower arrangement performance in Beijing. Gu Juanmin, the wife of Liu Deyou, Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and Kunihiko, minister of Japanese Embassy to China attended the meeting.

21. On June 27, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Shimizu Miwa. Editorial Board Member of Japan Toky News Editing Bureau, at Ministry of Culture and received her interview. Liu Deyou answered questions related to cultural contrast between China and Japan as well as Sino-Japanese relations.

22. On July 24, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Matsushima, Vice Minister of Affairs from Japan “Zenshinza” Troupe, Tsuda, Executive Director of Japan 21st Century Youth Culture Center, Iijima, Chairman of Japan IMT Co., Ltd. and other Japanese guests at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou expressed his welcome to the performance of Japan “Zenshinza” troupe in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations and the promotion of friendly exchanges between China and Japan. He expressed his appreciation to the dedication of Japan 21st Century Youth Culture Center and Mr. Tsuda to the cultural and art exchanges between China and Japan.

23. On July 2, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA and his wife attended the welcome banquet held by Anami Koreshige, Japanese Ambassador to China for Ozawa Akako, Chairman of Japan Sogetsu Flower Arrangement Association. Ozawa Akako had visited China several times. She had been committed to the exchange and performance of Chinese and Japanese flower arrangement art and welcomed by the majority of flower arrangement enthusiasts. Liu Deyou also attended the flower arrangement performance presented by Ozawa Akako on July 3, and hosted a banquet for Ozawa Akako and her delegation at Grand Hotel Beijing on June 26.

24. From July 26 to August 5, Chinese Culture Summer Camp hosted by CICA and undertaken by Tianjin Cathay Future Children’s Culture and Art Foundation and China Cultural International Tours Inc., was held in Beijing and Tianjin. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA and Liu Fengyan, Vice Secretary of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee attended the opening ceremony of the summer camp on July 29. Nearly one hundred persons of 7 delegations from Shukutoku University in Japan, Hanyang University in ROK, Macedonian High School in Thailand, Australia, Malta and other countries attended the activities of the summer camp. This summer camp gave prominence to cultural characteristics and strived to provide the participants with opportunities to experience the long history and deep heritage of Chinese culture during the process of learning martial arts, Peking Opera, Chinese, folk music and other courses so as to promote the Chinese traditional culture and enhance cultural exchanges among youths worldwide. Members in the summer camp also visited Ancient Culture Street in Tianjin, Tianjin Museum of Natural History, Huo Yuanjia Martial Arts School and other places. The success of the summer camp provided useful experience to the next summer camp. Chinese Culture Summer Camp aims to establish itself as the base for foreign teenagers to learn about the Chinese culture.

25. On July 28, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the opening ceremony of 2002 Tianjin International Children’s Culture and Art Festival. Peng Peiyun, Vice Chairman of NPC and senior officials from the CPC Tianjin Committee and Tianjin Municipal government as well as nearly 50 groups from 23 countries attended the opening ceremony.

26. On July 28, Portugal Youth Symphony Orchestra participated in the 2002 Tianjin International Children’s Culture and Art Festival as well as the subsequent performing activities.

27. On August 1, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA accepted the interview by Kato Chihiro, reporter from Japan Asahi Shimbun at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou answered the questions related to the 50-year history of Sino-Japanese relations and commemoration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations.

28. On August 10, the opening ceremony of the 9th Beijing International Accordion Competition hosted by CICA and undertaken by Beijing Accordion Society was held at theatre of Beijing Exhibition Center. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA, Huang Zhenchun, Deputy Director-General of Office of General Affairs of Ministry of Culture, Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations, masters in China’s accordion art circle and officials from Russian and Vietnamese embassies to China attended the opening ceremony.

29. On August 22, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA accepted the interview by Kudo Tetsuyasu, reporter from Japan Hokkaido Shimbun at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou elaborated on the celebration activities for the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations and reviewed the Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations.

30. From August 23 to September 1, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, CICA and Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs (in the name of the organizing committee) hosted Japan Media Arts Exhibition at the Art Gallery of China Central Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition was undertaken by China Central Academy of Fine Arts and Japan Computer Graphic Arts Association. Meng Xiaosi, Vice Minister of Culture, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA, Li Xin, Deputy Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations, Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations, Hayao Kawai, Minister of Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, Anami Koreshige, Japanese Ambassador in China and Takigawa Seiichi, principal of Japan Computer Association attended the opening ceremony. Meng Xiaosi met with the guests of the Japanese delegation before the opening ceremony. Ding Wei, Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations attended the welcoming banquet.

31. On August 29, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Hiromi Iwasaki, new principal of Sado Urasenke Beijing Association at Ministry of Culture.

32. On August 31, Japan Media Arts Concert, jointly hosted by CICA and the implementation committee of Japan Media Arts Exhibition and undertaken by China Cultural International Tours Inc. and China Central Academy of Fine Arts, was held at the hall of China Central Academy of Fine Arts. The concert highlighted the combination of high technology with arts.

33. From September 4 to 22, at the invitation by Sino-Japanese Friendship Association in Japan, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA joined the delegation of Sino-Japanese Friendship Association headed by Chairman Song Jian in attending the celebration conference in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations and other related commemorative activities. Liu Deyou also participated in the publication ceremony of the Japanese version of Travel of Time written by himself, the awarding ceremony of honorary doctorate by Soka University, the opening ceremony of Sino-Japanese Youth Calligraphy and Painting Exhibition, the opening ceremony of China Ceramic Exhibition and a series of other activities after the official visit of the delegation.

34. From September 1 to 16, a 46-member delegation of Japan-China Drama Exchange Association in Japan performed the dramas of Nice to Meet You Again and We are in the Same Boat in Shanghai and Wuhan at the invitation of CICA. This program was funded by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. It was part of the festivities in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations.

35. From September 14 to 26, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, International Exchange Fund of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan sent a 10-member delegation of Japanese “Gypsy Woman” Band to present tour performance in Dalian, Changchun, Shanghai, Chongqing and other cities at the invitation of CICA .

36. From September 12 to 22, under the arrangement of CICA, a 16-member art group from Guangdong Comprehensive Troupe performed in Mauritius, Reunion and Singapore at the invitation of Indian Ocean Chinese Association, Mauritius Chinese Association, Mayor of Letampon, Reunion and Singapore Ngee Ann Kongsi.

37. On September 27, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the 5-member delegation headed by Akihiro Fujii, Director of Japan Foundation at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou expressed his satisfaction with the tour performance of Japanese “Gypsy Women” Band jointly held by both parties in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, and stressed that both parties should further promote the exchanges and cooperation. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and Vice Secretary-General of CICA attended the meeting.

38. On September 26, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the celebration conference for the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Urasenke Beijing Association. Liu Deyou praised the long-term efforts and contributions made by Sado Urasenke for the friendship between China and Japan at the meeting, and encouraged the Beijing Association to make further efforts for the friendship and cultural exchanges between China and Japan.

39. On October 11, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Nishino, Permanent Director of Japan Institute of Calligraphy and Painting at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou expressed his appreciation for the efforts of Nishino in training Japanese calligraphy talents and promoting calligraphy exchanges between China and Japan.

40. On October 14, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Itou Tomoko, Chairman of Japan Theatre Association and her delegation at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou expressed his congratulations on the successful completion of the tour performance by the theatre association in China in celebration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. Later, Liu Deyou attended the return banquet hosted by the Japanese party on October 15.

41. On October 16, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of initial publication of China & The World Cultural Exchange, CICA and Centre of International Cultural Exchange held the tea party and performing activities at Laoshe Teahouse. 300 guests including Pan Zhenzhou, Vice Minister of Culture, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA, Lv Zhixian, Vice Chairman of CICA, Deputy Director-General Sun Jiamu, Director Lv Jun and directors of CICA as well as some foreign diplomats attended the activity. Pan Zhenzhou and Liu Deyou gave high praises and recognition to the achievements made by the magazine over the past 10 years in their speeches.

42. On October 28, Concert of Japan “Heaven” Jazz Orchestra undertaken by China Cultural International Tours Inc. at the invitation of CICA was held at the Concert Hall of China National Orchestra.

43. From November 1 to 7, a 4-member delegation of Vietnam-China Cultural Exchange Center headed by Ruan Wenren, Vice Director of Vietnam-China Cultural Exchange Center in Ministry of Culture and Communication of Vietnam paid friendly visits to Beijing, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Guangxi at the invitation of CICA. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the delegation during their stay in China. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and Vice Secretary-General of CICA held working talks with the delegation.

44. From November 4 to 11, CICA and China Theatre Association jointly held the 9th Sino-Japanese-ROK Drama Festival in Beijing. A total of 7 art troupes from China, Japan and ROK attended the performance of the drama festival. Zhou Weizhi, Chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA, Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and other senior officials attended the opening ceremony at the Cultural Palace of Nationalities.

45. On November 15, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Komae, new Secretary-General of Sado Urasenke Beijing Association and her delegation at Ministry of Culture. Liu Deyou highly commended the contribution made by Beijing Association for promoting cultural exchanges and Sado exchanges between China and Japan. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations was present at the meeting.

46. From November 16 to 22, a 4-member delegation of Netherlands-China Friendship Association headed by Mrs. Coinelia Haagsma paid friendly visits to Shanghai and Beijing at the invitation of CICA. During their stay in Beijing, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with and hosted a banquet for the delegation.. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and Vice Secretary-General of CICA held working talks with the delegation.

47. From November 22 to December 1, Sino-Japanese Friendly Ink Painting Exhibition in Commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of Normalization of Sino-Japanese Diplomatic Relations hosted by CICA and undertaken by China International Exhibition Agency was held at Yanhuang Art Museum in Beijing. Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the opening ceremony of the painting exhibition.

48. On November 25, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Kawamura Kotaro, Director of Tokyo Metropolitan Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry in Japan at Ministry of Culture. Whilst renewing friendship, the two parties discussed the possibilities of the visiting performance of Hirano Keiko, famous Japanese story-teller and other related exchange projects.

49. On December 4, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA attended the opening ceremony of the 30-year exhibition for the cooperation between Mitsubishi Group of Japan and China as well as the banquet.

50. On December 19, Liu Deyou, Executive Vice Chairman of CICA met with Hiromi Iwasaki, principal of Sado Urasenke Beijing Association. Both parties delivered the New Year greetings to each other and discussed related cooperation in the next year. Xie Jinying, Assistant Director-General of Bureau for External Cultural Relations and Vice Secretary-General of CICA attended the meeting.

51. From December 20 to 24, in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations, a 68-member student symphony orchestra from Tsinghua University, under the arrangement of CICA, attended the 17th Japan University Student Symphonic Music Festival in Tokyo and carried out exchange activities at the invitation of Sony Music Foundation. Media reporters from CCTV also accompanied the delegation. The delegation was the first foreign art troupe invited by Japan University Student Symphonic Music Festival. The performance presented by Tsinghua University Symphony Orchestra was highly praised by all circles in Japan and won a special prize.
