"Datongnian" is a traditional custom of the Miao ethnic group. The character "Da" means "making friends" and "tongnian" means "people of the same age". This event aims to deepen exchange and connect members among villages. One village invites its neighboring village to celebrate their spring festival together. Then the invited village organizes a "tongnian" group that plays the lunsheng (a wind instrument) to visit their peers in the host village. It later evolved into a get-together among the Miao, Yao and Dong ethnic groups and now it has become a collective activity for multi-ethnic groups.
