Chen says Zhu created enormous works during his life. The artist was fond of being with friends and gifted them many of his paintings, which made the compilation process difficult.

Together with a small team, Chen has visited different parts of the country to search for her late husband's paintings.

Many of Zhu's friends had his pieces, in addition to private collectors who bought them while he was alive.

"We estimate that Zhu had painted between 40,000 and 50,000 pieces," says Chen.

"But we are still in the process of finding his works."

To authenticate the artworks is also tough because of the volume of his paintings, says Chen.

"Zhu never cared about the price or the market. He painted for art."
