State Square, Victoria, Hong Kong, China We are standing at one side of Statue Square in Victoria, the British-owned city on Hong Kong island. The building nearest to us, surmounted by a dome, is the Post Office, and the one to the right of it, the Custom House. In the center of the square stands a statue of Queen Victoria, one of a number of excellent statues adorning the public places of the city. We also have a fine view of the precipitous hills in the distance, along the southern edge of the town, on which are built the homes of the government officials and the more prosperous European and American residents. On the next higher level are the government buildings, while scattered over the dominating hill slopes are the most desirable residential sections.
