"In the past, we didn't have sufficient facilities. If we wanted to do some scanning research, we had to take the relic out to another institute. There are a lot of limits on relic transport. You have to consider safety problems. So we couldn't do scanning research on many relics,” said Lian Haiping, facilities researcher at Shanghai Museum.

“With the newly equipped facilities, we can study more about our cultural relics in a safe surrounding. It will be a great improvement on our research work."

Shanghai Museum is planning to open the restoration work to the public in the future.

"We will introduce more interactive activities into our museum. I think it's the trend for museum development in China," said Yang Zhigang, director of Shanghai Museum.

The Shanghai Museum plays a leading role in relic conservation study in China. Many foreign museums have sent researchers to study the restoration techniques for Chinese cultural relics, including the British Museum.
