In Clean, for which Cheung became the first Asian actress to win an award at the Cannes Film Festival, she also performed songs written by David Roback of Mazzy Star and Dean Wareham of Dean & Britta.

In early 2014, Cheung announced her collaboration with the Beijing-based indie record company Modernsky, and performed at last year's Strawberry Music Festival in Beijing and Shanghai, which attracted around 100,000 fans.

Beijing-based folk singer-songwriter Song Dongye, who rose to fame for his song, Miss Dong, worked with Cheung on her forthcoming debut album.
