But by combining the two common perceptions, the artist says, he has instilled greatness in both the creatures and the medium. Chen, therefore, has titled his show With Dignity.
Through his work, Chen advocates respect for all living beings, including the humble ant, and invites viewers to listen to the "voices" that emanate from deep inside every ant in the show.
Chen first touched on the ant motif in 2003. His individual ant sculptures at the time betrayed cynicism and aggression.
