Lyon was a stunt man in Hollywood and also an experienced pilot. He even worked for the Associated Press as a press photographer. After he came to China in 1943, he piloted a private plane for Chang Hsueh-liang, who was the effective ruler of northeast China. When the Battle of Shanghai broke out, Lyon happened to be there. As a press photographer he always rushed to shoot pictures of the bloody fights under fire. The whole battle was recorded by Lyon’s lens, leaving the precious images for history.
