Many counties introduced quarantine measures and halted work and school due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Teachers and students stopped attending school.

Overseas Chinese schools were no exception. In order not to delay courses, teachers made extra efforts.

Teacher become ‘anchors’ for live course

It had never occurred to Chinese teachers that one day they would be holding online courses.

Chinese teachers connected their classes with their everyday life. They used WeChat as tool to recommend child-focused and cultural short cartoons to students.

After Duanhuan school in Cambodia launched prevention and control measures, the online class began. Teachers paid great efforts to design online classes and provided students instructions. Many parents even started studying Chinese with their children. One of the parents expressed appreciation: “Classes wore a new look. We appreciated the teachers’ efforts.”

School also taught students and parents how to protect themselves from the virus and offered psychological help and course instructions for students.

Online courses create new experience

Teachers and students used to interact face to face, and now they are distant from each other and can be only seen on the head portraits on the computer screen. Students at first didn’t adapt the change but gradually became accustomed to it and were fond of this new form of class.

Liu Hong, teacher of Sishui New School of Three Languages in Indonesia, said: “I was focused on students’ study previously, but during the online courses, we started to share our life and emotions.”

The enthusiasm of studying English did not be drop. The online courses made studying amazing as normal.
