Zhang Yueran is the representative figure of Chinese writers born in the 1980s. Besides writing, Zhang manages a literary magazine. Zhang believes the links between writers and good translations are sometimes casual, unexpected and interesting. The English version of her collection of novellas, Ten Loves, was nominated for an Irish literary prize earlier this year. It was the contest’s first nomination of a Chinese writer.

"The translator of the book is a Singaporean writer I happened to meet in Iowa, USA," Zhang said. "I think there're more, even better Chinese novellas waiting to be translated by good translators."
