The Ploughing Festival in Thailand
At the beginning of each year's rainy season in May, the Thai royal family holds the traditional Ploughing Ceremony to pray for favorable weather and good harvest, attracting many people. However, as Thailand is currently going through the third wave of COVID-19, all public activities have been canceled. This year's ceremony was held inside the Royal Palace instead of open to the public.
On April 27, Sumran Sarabun, deputy permanent secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, announced that this year's Ploughing Ceremony will be held at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha in the Grand Palace and the agricultural experimental field at the Chitralada Royal Villa with the King's royal assent. The King appointed Surayud, the president of the Privy Council, to preside over the Blessing Ceremony at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha on May 9 and the Planting Ceremony at the agricultural experimental field at the Chitralada Royal Villa on May 10. Thongplew Kongjun, permanent secretary of MOAC, was appointed as the executor of the Planting Ceremony who would sow the blessed seeds of various crops on the experimental field.
The Thai royal family attaches great importance to the cultivation of improved varieties of crops, and the seeds used on the Ploughing Ceremony were all improved ones with high quality. After the ceremony, these seeds would be distributed to farmers through MOAC's seed centers across the country.
