Jiju Opera Troupe of Jilin Province

The Jiju Opera Troupe of Jilin Province was founded in January 1959. Since its founding, it has followed the principle of Holding on to its own style and assimilating the best from other schools. It has created and staged over 100 plays. The plays Peach and Plum Blossom, Yanqing Se1ling Thread and Revered Prefect Bao Zheng Apologizes were made into films in the 1970s. Its operas Prefect Bao Driving the Donkey and The Ginseng Girl won in 1985 the national prizes respectively for excellent script and excellent repertoire of traditional opera performance. Overnight Empress won the national prize for best performance in 1993 and the Wenhua Award for best play in 1994. Guandong Snow, a modem Jiju opera won the national prize for excellent repertoire of traditional opera in 1995 and the Wenhua Award for new repertoire of the Ministry of Culture in 1997. The TV serial Peach and Plum Blossom, jointly-produced by the CCTV, Jilin TV and Jiju Opera Troupe, won the Golden Eagle Award. Its Three Invitations to Fan Lihua was acclaimed widely in Hong Kong and so was its Flaming Mountain in Japan.

Since its founding, the troupe has presented many prominent artists, for instance, Wu Li, Sui Jingying, Wang Qingxia, Yang Junying, Jiang Xiuyu, Liu Feng, Huo Fuqing who were popular in the 1960s and 1970s. Nowadays, the second generation of performers, scriptwriters and directors are represented by Wang Guifen, Li Zhanchun, An Jingfang. Ma Shijie, Liu Fuying, Zhao Wanjie and Qi Shiming. Wang Guifen, its first grade actress, who played the role of Man Su in Overnight Empress, won the Wenhua Award for best performance. Li Zhanchun, an actor who played the role of Guo Sihu in the opera Guangdong Snow also won the Wenhua Award for acting. Ma Shijie, known as the handkerchief player of Northeast China, acted the characters Shi Qian and Little Clever Boy in Yan Qing Selling Thread and Overnight Empress respectively, won the prize for best supporting actor of the 6th White Magnolia Award.
