The museum covers an area of 344 square meters, 230 square meters of which is used for exhibition. It has collected 10,062 items of historical relics, of which the precious ones are theBianshi(a stone acupuncture needle used in ancient times) left from in the Neolithic Age, the pottery sewage from the Qin Dynasty (221-206BC), the gilded bronze censer from the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), the pottery bone ash jar from the Jin Dynasty (265-460), the large pottery gourd for holding herbal medicine from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), the bronze human figure for learning acupuncture from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) and various editions of ancient medical books, such asZhenghe Bencao(Zhenghe Materia Medica),Bencao Gangmu(Compendium of Materia Medicaby Li Shizhen 1518-1593) andChifengsui(a special book onqigong,a system of deep breathing exercises) from the Ming Dynasty.
The museum reflects briefly the main achievements of the Chinese medical development through the ages with the display of cultural relics and information materials of the medical history.
The museum has publishedStories of Medical History,the Index of Medical History Papers in Chinese,the Literature Index of Chinese Medical History in Foreign Languagesandthe Traditional Chinese Pharmacy(in English).
