Tibetan medicine, one of the world's oldest ancient medical systems that began over 2,300 years ago, is a mix of science, art and philosophy that takes a holistic approach to health care.
To date, the use of altogether 2,294 kinds of Tibetan medicine has been recorded. Over 300 of them are commonly in use, of which over 200 of them are herbs, making up 70 percent of the total. Over 40 (12 percent) are animal derivatives and with the remaining 40 (14 percent) coming from minerals.
