"I have always been hoping that those people who are not interested in animation would want to watch my works. I am confident that my animations can strike a chord with viewers," Shinkai has said.
The 43-year-old rising director names Castle in the Sky by Hayao Miyazake as his favorite anime.
"But I am not going to be the Next Hayao Miyazaki. Our drawing styles are totally different. Hayao Miyazaki focuses more on the human-nature relationship and saving the earth while mine centers on people's daily life," Shinkai says.
"I do not think my works can change the whole world, but perhaps it can change some people, perhaps. I always hold the view that beautiful scenery can heal people's minds. That's enough," Shinkai added.
Makoto Shinkai is renowned for his conscientious efforts in scenery drawing. Cloud, color, rays of light and open fields represent the four essential elements in his animation creation.
