Malaysian Chinese teenagers set off on a journey to find their roots in China

Malaysian Chinese teenagers started a journey in China to discover their roots and experience the traditional Chinese culture in Dezhou University on November 29. Learning about Peking Opera, handwriting, wushu and cucurbit flute, the 135 teenagers had a good time and developed great interest in Chinese culture. The winter camp was launched in Dezhou University on November 25.

During the camp, Dezhou University invited some famous masters of Peking Opera in Dezhou City to deliver lectures on Peking Opera to the teens. The masters prepared costumes, props and programs for them. Tian Shengqiang, headmaster of the youth activity center for Peking Opera in Dezhou City, said the teens showed great interest in the courses and developed further understanding of the profound culture of Peking Opera.

During the activity, the Malaysia teens dressed in costumes and learned the movements and performed with the masters. “We used to watch it online and listen to the stories about traditional Chinese culture. Now we are in costumes and can experience them by ourselves,” said Lin Zhanqing, one of the Malaysian teens.

Dezhou University also offered courses on other Chinese traditional culture such as handwriting, wushu and cucurbit flute. The teens showed great interest in traditional Chinese culture as they learned and practiced. In addition, the teens will also go to Beijing, Jinan, Tai 'an, Qufu and other places for studying. Up to now, Dezhou City has received nearly 1,700 person-times from 20 groups of overseas Chinese teenagers from 13 countries in ASEAN, Europe and America.
