Singapore-China Youth Art Festival makes a mark in Singapore

 "Malan Flower, Malan Flower, never fear rain and wind, hardworking people are talking, may you bloom soon." With the musical performance Malan Flower and Children's Song Creating Competition ending successfully, a one-month art festival, 2018 Singapore-China Youth Art Festival, concluded in Singapore. The festival created an opportunity for Singaporean children to appreciate Chinese culture and art. At the same time, it also built a bridge for art educators between China and New Zealand, promoting mutual cultural and educational exchanges between the two countries.

During the festival, Chinese and Singaporean art groups presented a variety of performances, including Chinese Children's Art Theatre’s serial story "China Story in the Pocket", the campus tour “Change! Little Jeep", and performance "Malan Flower", which was contributed by children from the two nations. In addition, there were also local troupe performances and competitions that were full of lion culture, so that more local teenagers could feel the charm of Chinese excellent traditional culture and art.

Since its foundation in 2016, the festival has been cooperating with schools in Singapore to bring more students closer to the stage of art and to appreciate the beauty of Chinese culture. This year's festival went into Aitong Primary School, Public Peiqun Primary School and Kangwei Primary School to conduct a tour of "Little Jeep Change". The performances attracted more than 1,500 teachers and students. The event received huge reception from the teachers and students. The performances provided more students with opportunities to accept the enlightenment and artistic influence of drama in cheerful stories.

The festival also attracted the participation of other nationalities, including a Russian, who participated in the local troupe show, an Egyptian-born girl Sharu, who participated in the fairy tale musical "Malan Flower", as well as a number of non-Chinese children that participated in children's songs competition. The festival presented an influence across boundaries, ethnic groups and Singapore's multi-ethnic characteristics.

The creation and promotion of the Singapore-China Youth Art Festival was a successful practice, which was held by three organizers. After three years of cooperation, the organizers - Singapore China Cultural Center, China Children's Art Theatre, Singapore Press Holdings China Media Group, have played their respective strengths, relied on and integrated the resources of all parties to ensure the favoring implementation of the event. The influence of the festival in Singapore also increased. The 2018 Singapore-China Youth Art Festival has significantly improved in the scale of activities and the influence of activities. The festival has dedicated 12 performances to local audiences. Each performance was warmly welcomed by the audience and more than 4,000 audience had directly taken part.

The Singapore Chinese Cultural Center has always played a role of coordinator in establishment and development of the festival. In addition, to providing support for hardware facilities during the event, various channels for cooperation between China and Singapore were opened, which were more orderly and effective. For example, one of the highlights of this year's festival was a fairytale musical named “Malan Flower”, performed by China Malan Flower Art School, Beijing Dengshikou Primary School and the Singapore's  Malan Flower Art School. It has been benefited from the long-term promotion of the Cultural Center. Singapore Press Holdings Chinese Media Group has also fully utilized the influence of its "Zaobao" and various student newspapers, which have opened up various channels for the activities. The Singapore-China Youth Art Festival provided an extensive stage, and at the same time, combined with the advantages of diversified development performing a literary piece which was full of lion city humanity characteristics during the festival. The children's song creating competition held in 2016 had also entered its third year this year. More children can experience the rhythm of Chinese in the performance with catchy songs and lively performance. According to preferences of Singapore audience, the China Children's Art Theatre selected a number of high-quality repertoires which are averagely performed more than 600 times at home and abroad each year, laying a solid and diverse content for the festival's activities.

At present, the popularity of the Singapore-China Youth Art Festival has gradually increased, and it has also successfully promoted the awareness of Singaporean Chinese and Chinese culture. In order to make the festival more abundant and vivid, based on existing main activities, the next festival are being plotted by organizers, including parent-child workshop, children's story writer's lecture, and children’s books exhibition, which will further increase the participation of young local families in the form of more diversity.
