Basic Info about Fuzhou

Located in the lower reaches of the Min River, the capital city of Fujian Province, Fuzhou City is situated in the eastern part of the Province. Fuzhou, the center of economy, politicsl, culture and transportation of Fujian Province, was so named after a mountain situated in the north called Mt. Fu. Additionally, many banyans were planted in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), and now provide shade for the entire city giving it another good name - Rong Cheng (Banyan City).

 

 

Fuzhou governs five areas, two cities and six counties, covering 12 thousand square kilometers. It has a total population of 6.87 million, and its planned urban area covers 1043 square kilometers, housing 2.71 million urban residents.

Fuzhou, with its favorable geographic environment, is located between the Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta, close to Hongkong- Macau and well-connected with Southeast Asia. Among the provincial cities of China’s mainland, Fuzhou is nearest to Taiwan; the distance between Pingtan County and Taiwan Xinzhu is only 68 nautical miles, and it is less than 8000 meters between Lian Riverg Huangqi Peninsula and Matsu. The number of Taiwan natives with Fuzhou citizenship is more than 800,000, and the clansmen association is established in each of Taiwan’s county (city) . Fuzhou is also a famous hometown of overseas Chinese. According to incomplete statistics, the number of overseas Fuzhou citizens is about 2.7 million, scattered across more than 100 countries and areas.
