  Life in Dunhuang
"Shai Yaotui"

Shai yaotui, literally “to put one’s waist and legs under the sun,” takes place on June 6 of the Chinese lunar calendar, and is a tradition in Dunhuang.

The sand on the Singing Sand Mountain is very pure, without any dust. It is said that putting one’s waist and legs in the hot sand, especially on June 6 of the Chinese lunar calendar, will cure arthritis. Therefore, this became a tradition in Dunhuang.

Every year, on June 6, people with waist and leg problems will go to the Singing Sand Mountains with soup and wine. They bury their waists and legs under the hot sand and hold umbrellas over their heads for three hours. If one stays for seven days like this, his or her waist and leg diseases can be cured.

There is a sand therapy salon under the Singing Sand Mountain, mainly engaging in sand therapy and acupuncture. These treatments can make the diseases go away faster.
