"She huo" Festival
Every year, Dunhuang celebrates the Chinese lunar New Year with grand celebrations, among which the most important and popular activity is called “she huo”.
When the “she huo” activity was put on show every year, the whole street was filled with parade, colored flags and the noise of the drums. The brilliant performance fully showcased the picture of Dunhuang people pursuing a good harvest and a happy new year.
There are various kinds of “she huo” performed in Dunhuang. The traditional ones are called “Di beng zi”, “Da gouxiong”, “Taiping gu” and so on. There are also imported ones from other cities and provinces.
In recent years, a large-scale “she huo” called “Dunhuang Songs and Dances” was choreographed according to the drums and dance pieces in Dunhuang’s frescoes, and featured pure local characteristics.
