Did you see the gate pictures? This is a Chinese tradition, an old tradition. So you can see people will put the red couplets on each side of the door and also they will put the gate pictures on the door, right? So this is the old tradition to celebrate the Spring Festival, we call it “guonian.” Do you know what the meaning of it is? Because “nian” in Chinese legends used to be a very fierce animal, every year it will come to the village and kill a lot of children and get a lot of food from the village. So people were so scared of the “nian,” this fierce animal. But they had nothing to do with this because they were so scared of this animal. One day a villager found this animal was very scared of red color and noise, so people had to put the red couplets on each side of the door and set off fire crackers.
