Boundary pushing dance

2014-11-13 14:20:08

(Shanghai Star) By Zhang Kun

"At The Royal we were so blinkered. Some people told me I would have to dance naked (at NDT)." He gave it a try anyway, and as soon as he walked in the door, his world changed. "I realized it was the place to be if you had creative aspirations."

At SGT, Los Angles Dance Project had a soldout performance in June, and in August, Baiser Vole, a modern dance gala show featuring world-famous ballet stars also enjoyed a great success.

In recent years, SGT has made continuous efforts to introduce modern dance work to Shanghai, keeping a share of dance projects in its program with a plan for each season. These shows often struggle at the box office, despite positive reviews.

However, Wang and her colleagues in Shanghai's theater scene are witnessing a growing number of people who are hungry to see modern dance in the city.

NDT will also give master's class, open rehearsals and communicate with the city's dance companies during its stay in Shanghai.
