Panda Package Project brings smiles to children across the world
The China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation celebrated the third anniversary of the Panda Package Project on March 22, 2022.
According to the foundation, after three years of efforts, 2.6 billion orders on Tmall, an online retailer, from millions of merchants and consumers have turned into "Gifts from Panda Land". The gifts, including learning materials, daily necessities and sanitary products, will be sent to over one million children in 11 countries.
In February 2019, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and Ali Philanthropy entered into a strategic cooperation and set up an international care Package project named "Panda Pack". The project attracted extensive participation from consumers and businesses through Alibaba Charity Baby, and eventually raised more than 128 million yuan based on 2.6 billion consumer orders.
According to the authorities, each package is worth 150 yuan and includes 102 items. The children can not only use the package in the classroom, but also take the items such as towels, soap, lunch boxes and plush toys home.
Alibaba Foundation created a new mode of charity transaction, through which merchants can set up goods as "charity items" in the background program and set the donation amount for each transaction. After consumers purchase goods with the charity logo on the shopping website, the platform will automatically donate the amount set by the seller, such as 2 cents per order, to the public welfare organizations and public welfare projects designated by the merchant. The organic combination of public welfare and high-frequency business transactions has shaped this public welfare model with strong participation and outstanding sustainability.
Children in 11 beneficiary countries, including Burma, Cambodia, Laos, Nepal, Ethiopia, are very fond of the Panda Package Project. They treat the packages as treasures and use them effectively. The project, as a result, has a positive impact on their families, schools, and communities.
Yi Bin, 11, lives with his grandmother near his school. Yi Bin's parents went away for work before he was in primary school and broke all contact with him. The old grandmother makes a living selling food in the market every day. Since childhood, Bin never had his own toys. Every time he wanted to play, he would go to his neighbors and friends to play together. The care package mascot, Baobao, became his first toy that truly belonged to himself.
"A man in a distant country is a window of his country to another. A practical and effective public welfare project is just like China's 'smile' to the world." said Lin Yuan, a Burmese officer of the CFPA.
