Modelling His Own Path

Updated: 2012-10-11 15:06

"Humanosaur"

"Earth to Earth"

Without a stable occupation, he spent all his time studying and teaching ceramics. At first things went well, but later he encountered a financial storm in 1997, and the SARS crisis in 2003 which led to several years of economic slide and the number of his students fell significantly.

In 2005 when he was worried about the future of the studio Pottery Farm, a former student asked him if two kid ceramics classes could be opened in his studio. The studio survived.

Now he always shares the production process of his works in class where he also makes a living, although not much. “I love the making process so much that I don’t spend much time looking for customers. Why would I want to make my life so stressful;? Of course I would love to make some works if someone wants to customize, but I seldom take initiative to find them. Nowadays there are many young artists eager to find shortcuts without gaining enough basic skills.”

Now Tsang is busy preparing for his solo exhibition, “Living Clay” in 2013, an opportunity provided to him by his win at the 2012 Taiwan Ceramics Biennial. “Tears” is one of the pieces.

"Compared with the income of a policeman, that for artists is low and quite unstable, but how many people on this globe can find a thing that he can concentrate on for his whole life? I have found the thing, which is very romantic. I feel like I am already rich", Tsang said.
