The “Hutongs and Siheyuans in Beijing” Exhibition Kicks off

Hutongs (a type of narrow streets or alley most commonly associated with Beijing, China) and Siheyuans (traditional courtyard residences in Beijing, China) are the iconic Beijing structures.

Co-sponsored by the Beijing Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage and the Beijing Municipal Archives, the “Hutongs and Siheyuans in Beijing” Exhibition opened in Hall A at the first underground floor of the Capital Museum on June 12, 2012. It will last until October 21, 2012.

This exhibition displays 84 sets of artifacts from the Capital Museum, 46 sets of borrowed artifacts, over 160 pieces of physical files from the Beijing Municipal Archives, over 300 pieces of digitalized files and over 100 photographs. With the help of modern multimedia technology and artistic designing, the artifacts and the files, two carriers of history and culture, are presented from multiple perspectives in a multi-dimensional display. The artifacts and the files also show the visitors the historical development of Hutongs and Siheyuans, and the life conditions of the people at that time.

With the city as context, the exhibition focuses on the formation and development of Hutongs and Siheyuans and the life of Beijing residents.

During the exhibition period, there will be ten lectures whose lecturers are all experts and scholars of Beijing history and culture. These lectures not only provide access to everyone but are interesting, and can meet the demands of different audiences.
