Yanchuan County, named by the Chinese Ministry of Culture as “the contemporary folk painting county”, is located in the hinterland of The Loess Plateau alongside the bank of the Yellow River east to Yan’an. The unique features of the county’s traditional art are influenced by the Ordos region, Mongolia and the Han nationality.

Based on traditional paper cutting, embroidery and fresco, people in Yanchuan developed cloth pasted picture through the techniques of sewing and patching. They use different colors, textures and shapes of fabrics. The cloth sewing technique puts large cloths together and includes sticking, sewing, and embedding flower designs. Patching adds small decorative cloth onto the background.

Cloth pasted pictures from Yanchuan introduce folklores, characters from dramas, customs, animals, flowers, and other auspicious patterns. It tends to use bright colors and exaggerates the scenes depicted. People in Yanchuan love wearing garments in red, yellow, blue and green, which shows their optimism and pursuit for a better life.
