The Influence on Cizhou Kiln from Drinking Custom in the Song and Yuan

Updated: 2012-03-31 11:09

In addition, the vases like Picture four and five are pottery for holding wine. In the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), vases from the Cizhou kiln change from black painted on white to brown. Obviously it is the result of adapting to fast and mass production on a large scale. More than half of them are wine vessels. It’s thus clear that drinking habits and custom increase the demand of Cizhou kiln porcelain, and impel them to create new varieties.

The reflections on Cizhou kiln of drinking custom in the Song Dynasty and the Yuan Dynasty

People who lived in the Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty like playing wager game. Poets gather in one place, usually beside the rivulet, and drink wine. It is said that they would float their wine glasses on the water where the water would flow along the stone groove and they would recite poems before their glasses floated up to them. Ordinary citizens also seek pleasure from wine, even women. They would enjoy their time when going out with their friends or in the night of festivals like the day before Pure Brightness when only cold food is served, midwinter and in a new year.
