Zhang Yi began learning violin at the age of five. In 1990, he was recommended for admission to the university and studied conducting with Professor Xu Xin, at the same time noticed and appreciated by Professor Ji Ruikai. From 2000 to 2003, he studied with the prominent German conductor and educator Professor Max Pommer at Saarbrücken Musikhochschule in Germany, and obtained the Master's degree in conducting.

Cooperating with China National Symphony Orchestra, China Radio Symphony Orchestra, Macao Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Radio Symphony Orchestra, Chinese National Orchestra, National Ballet of China, China National Opera House, Hong Kong Sinfonietta and Saarbrucken Radio Symphony Orchestra, he has organized concerts, conducted performances of opera and ballet music and directed record making for many times. Having been on several visits to Europe and other Asian countries, he was highly acclaimed by the King and Queen of Malaysia during his tour and appraised by the local media as "a splendid, miraculous and charming young conductor".

In May 2001, in cooperation with National Ballet of China, he conducted the world premiere of the ballet Raise the Red Lantern in Beijing which is composed by Chen Qigang and directed by Zhang Yimou. From 2002 to 2003, the same work turned out to be a great success in Singapore, Paris and London. Another success is the recording of Ye Xiaogang's orchestral works published by Wergo (Germany) through working together with Saarbrucken Radio Symphony Orchestra. Since December 2002, Zhang Yi has been the music director and principal conductor of National Ballet of China Orchestra. In April 2004, he led China National Symphony Orchestra to participate in the "April Spring Friendship Art Festival" in Pyongyang, North Korea. In September 2005, he organized Lanzhou Song & Dance Troupe Orchestra to visit Australia and staged a concert at the well-known Sydney Opera House. In May 2006, in joint efforts with Cuba Symphony Orchestra, he organized a symphony concert in Havana for the opening ceremony of Cuba Arts Festival.
