Dance Drama “Liberation” Staged in Shanghai

Updated: 2011-03-24 15:35

The director Zhang Jigang, a native of Shanxi, always adds the local character to its production. In Liberation, Zhou Xikou(Moving Westwards) and Xiang Qinqin(Want to Kiss You) and other well-known Chinese folk songs were also expressed in a fresh yet impressive way.

On the sidelines of the performance cloth tigers and a traditional Chinese toy were on display. Tigers are believed to have supernatural powers, and mothers make the toys to guard their children from evil. Guanling paper-cutting, another Shanxi specialty, is noted for its sophisticated procedure and freshness in luster.

“Shanxi is known as the fountain of folk opera and folk songs due to its rich historical and cultural traditions,” said Guo Jianli, a leader of an art troupe from Shanxi. “By staging Liberation, we hope to bring the colorful local cultures to the audience here.”
