The 36-episode TV series based on the book "A Dream of the Red Mansion" was filmed in two months on a lot in China's Hebei province.

In 1986, the Rongguo House Movie and Television Base was built in strict accordance to the book, which is one of China's four great classical novels.

Located just 15 kilometers from Shijiazhuang, the capital city of Hebei, the 22,000-square-meter base is designed with the complex style traditional in the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911).

The Rongguo House, which has 4,700 square meters of floor space, is divided into three parts and has 212 rooms.

Each of the three parts was created specifically for scenes in the story involving three of the main characters: Jia Zheng, Grandmother Jia and Fengjie.
