During the Clear and Bright period, the weather warms up, spring awakens, and nature is at its best. It is clear and bright.

In China there is an old saying that goes: “people must sow seeds during Clear and Bright.” Apart from Northwest and Northeast china, the daily average temperature in most areas is over 12℃. It is already a period of busy spring plowing and sowing throughout China. In the south of the Huang-Huai Plain, cole flowers yellow the fields. The tee trees send out new shoots. It is a suitable season for massive plowing; corn, broomcorn and cotton seeds must be sowed. In this period, cold air actives are still frequent; the weather is always changing. Farmers must protect crops from harm by spring frost and low temperatures.

“It drizzles endlessly during the Clear and Bright period.” This line perfectly describes the weather during Clear and Bright in the Lower Yangzi Region. Abundant rainfall can meet the needs of crop growth. However, sometimes crops are likely to remain waterlogged and suffer from a lack of sunshine because of the excessive rainfall. On the other hand, in the vast areas of the Huang-Huai Plain, rainfall is insufficient during the Clear and Bright period. It is inadequate to meet the demands of vigorous crop growth. Farmers must avoid the threat of spring drought by improving spring their irrigation skills.

In North China, the temperature goes up rapidly during this period. It’s dry and windy. Sandstorm weather occurs frequently. The daily average temperature is 10-15℃ in most areas of North China. Grass and trees grow vigorously in this period, so forest fire prevention is important.

Rainfall increases significantly in the Lower-Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River. Because of cold air activities, cold (daily temperature below 10℃) rain that lasts over three days is common in early spring. Lack of sunshine will greatly affect rice, cotton and other thermophilic crops. In South China, the pre-flood season will begin due to the constant, heavy rain, and people must be cautious of stormy weather.
