China's film administration is to release legitimate, real time box office figures to the public, in a bid to crack down on fake box office reports.

The statistics will be released through multiple platforms, including the social media outlets of Weibo and Weichat.

Box office data is collected under the State Administration of Press Publication, Film, Radio and TV.

It was only shared among industry insiders and some media members.

Some movie companies even inflated their box office revenue for hype and promotion.

The new official platform will launch in early November.
