A forum promoting Taoist culture was held in Benxi, Liaoning province, on September 25, 2013.
With the theme of “Chinese traditional culture reviviscence and culture prosperity,” the forum gathered more than 60 scholars and experts on Taoist culture from China and abroad, to share their views on the development of Taoism and the influence it has had on Chinese culture, society and its historical significance, and also how people can inherit and move forward the delicate traditions within today’s modern world.
Taoism is an ancient religion originating from the writings and philosophy of Lao Tze (BC 571-471). According to his "Tao De Ching (Dao De Jing)," everything in the universe was born in a vacuum, and a balance must be achieved between human beings and nature.
You Xilin, professor of Literature College at Shaanxi Normal University, said that due to the separation from mainstream culture, the influence of Taoism was diluted by Confucianism and Buddhism during the dynasty eras. But now, with growing respect to life preservation efforts and environmental protection, it is a good time for Taoist culture and thought to be revived.
Professor An Lun from Zhejiang University pointed out that to carry on and develop traditional Taoism, a modern system of religious belief for Taoism should be built, and followers should pay attention to moral practices.
