Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum

An ancient saying goes that,Suzhou and Hangzhou are the best place to live while Luoyang is an ideal place to die. Luoyang is a valuable land with a good geomantic omen. In the past dynasties, many ancient emperors, princes, high-level officials, and other celebrities were buried in the Mangshan area at Luoyang. A poem by a poet of Tang Dynasty perfectly reflects the circumstance stating that Mangshan is full of ancient tombs of Luoyang people and without any idle land.

Founded in 1984, Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum located in the Mangshan Town, the northern suburb of Luoyang City is the only example of its kind in China. With a land of 130 Mu (21 acres) and the construction area of 8,200 square meters, this museum consists of a group of building complex in Han Dynasty architectural style. Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum is noted for its grandeur and, elegance with classic simplicity. Luoyang Ancient Tombs Museum can be divided into two parts such as upper level and underground. The upper level includes the great white marble gate, main hall, exhibition hall, and other towers and pavilions. The tomb models and other restored funerary objects dating from the Stone Age to the Han Dynasty are displayed here. The underground area is the essence of the whole tomb museum where over 20 ancient tombs can be found showcasing typical Chinese funeral and tomb culture from Western Han Dynasty to Northern Song Dynasty. What’s more, varied and colorful painted murals presenting distinct features are also exhibited here.
