The Stone Buddha Statue
The stone Buddha statue is housed in a temple located in Shantou village, Qixian town in the northwest of Shaoxing. Today the temple is called the stone Buddha temple.
The stone Buddha, housed in the 3rd grotto inside the stone Buddha temple, measures 6.5 meters in height in altorelievo. On the head are snail shape buns and the face is full and round; the Buddha looks downward with the eyes open only a little; the earlobes are so long that they almost touch the shoulders; the nose bridge bulges and the lips are thin; the face looks benign and stern at the same time; the left hand presses upon the knee and the gesture of his right hand shows that he is giving a lecture on a Buddhist sutra. The Buddha wears a cassock and sits cross-legged on a 1.2-meter-high Sumeru pedestal decorated with narrow-leaved lotus flowers facing upwards.
The stone Buddha has been on the list of the cultural relics under county-level protection since 1961.
