Seven Suggestions for Exercising in the Summer

Traditionally, in China, there are different ways to stay healthy for each season. People should keep in mind several things when playing sports in the summer.

First, wear light colored cotton clothes when exercising. Light color clothes can reduce the absorption of heat and make people feel cooler. Cotton clothes can absorb sweat better than synthetic fiber clothes. Therefore, when exercising in the summer, it’s better to wear light color cotton clothes. In addition, Exercise clothes should be loose and comfortable.

Second, don’t exercise too early in the morning. Even though many people would like to exercise as early as possible, people should not exercise too early in the morning, because it could negatively affect their sleep.

Third, avoid direct sun radiation. In the summer, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., ultraviolet rays and infrared rays are so strong that they can damage people’s skin and eyes and even can cause skin cancer. Long time exposure to infrared rays can lead to the increase of intracranial temperature or heliosis. Therefore, people should avoid playing sports or exercising when the sun is at its brightest, or on really sunny days.

Fourth, control the intensity of the exercise. In the summer, because of the heat, people use more energy compared to other times of the year. It’s important not to exercise too hard. Measures should be taken immediately when sunstroke happens.

Fifth, stay hydrated when exercising. People sweat a lot when exercising, which causes their body to lose salt. This can lead to cramps. Thus it’s important to drink lots of fluids in the summer. It is best to drink 150 to 200 ml of water every 15 to 20 minutes. It is better to stay away from sweet drinks because sweet drinks are harder on your stomach. Also don’t drink a lot of water right after exercising because that is hard on your heart.
